{"id":7,"date":"2014-07-08T14:24:59","date_gmt":"2014-07-08T14:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sps.ed.ac.uk\/digistis\/?page_id=7"},"modified":"2014-07-09T09:53:02","modified_gmt":"2014-07-09T09:53:02","slug":"what-is-digistis-edinburgh","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sps.ed.ac.uk\/digistis\/what-is-digistis-edinburgh\/","title":{"rendered":"What is DigiSTIS @ Edinburgh?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This blog reports on activities of research, teaching out public engagement on the broad theme of information and communication technology (ICTs) and society, by staff at the University of Edinburgh, working in the fields of Science, Technology Studies (STS), Innovation and related disciplines.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Background<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Science Technology and Innovation Studies work on ICTs has been a strength of the University for 30 years, since the establishment of the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #252525\">ESRC Programme on Information and Communications Technologies (1986 &#8211; 1995). This work has continued under the banner of the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #31303d\">Institute for the Study of Science, Technology and Innovation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.issti.ed.ac.uk\">ISSTI<\/a>), and more recently as part of the new Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stis.ed.ac.uk\">STIS<\/a>) Subject group in the School of Social and Political Studies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This network\u00a0involves colleagues from other specialist centres including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business-school.ed.ac.uk\/research\/clusters\/entrepreneur-innovation\">Entrepreneurship and Innovation group in the Business School<\/a>, the Economics Deptartment,, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scriptcentre.ed.ac.uk\">Centre for Intellectual Property and Technology Law<\/a> in Law, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.designinformatics.org\/home\">Design Informatics <\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eca.ed.ac.uk\/architecture-landscape-architecture\">Architecture &amp; Landscape Architecture<\/a> in the Edinburgh College of Art, <span style=\"color: #330000\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dice.education.ed.ac.uk\">Digital Cultures and Education <\/a>research in the School of Education,\u00a0<\/span>the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.social-informatics.org\/db\/11\/1567\/Research%20Centres\/Social%20Informatics%20Cluster,%20University%20of%20Edinburgh,%20UK\/?&amp;p1=181&amp;p2=153&amp;page=1\">Social Informatics Cluster in the School of Informatics<\/a>, various groups in the Schools of Engineering and Geosciences, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cphs.mvm.ed.ac.uk\">Centre for Population Health Science<\/a>s. Numerous additional linkages have been established across the College of Science and Engineering and the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine with their international research strengths.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">ICTs have been a core element of teaching curriculum on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stis.ed.ac.uk\/study_stis\">undergraduate and post graduate courses in STIS<\/a>, in particular in the flourishing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stis.ed.ac.uk\/research\/completed_phds\">PhD programme<\/a>. The team is launching new online courses in &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sps.ed.ac.uk\/gradschool\/prospective\/distance_learning\/programmes\/digital_research_challenges\">Using Digital Research<\/a>&#8216; and in the field of Social Informatics.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Research Projects<\/h2>\n<p>As well as the work of the PICT centre, a number of research grants have funded work on ICTs in recent years. \u00a0This complements a wide range of research on general issues of science, technology and innovation that underpins the<\/p>\n<table style=\"color: #000000\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"www.create.ac.uk\">CREATe<\/a>\u00a0New business models in the creative industry and the role of new technological platforms for content distribution and intellectual property management.<br \/>\n<small> 2013 &#8211;
