{"id":161,"date":"2016-07-19T14:59:37","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T14:59:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sps.ed.ac.uk\/engineering-life\/?p=161"},"modified":"2021-04-21T15:11:20","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T15:11:20","slug":"the-jurassic-park-effect-the-stories-we-tell-when-deciding-how-to-govern-emerging-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sps.ed.ac.uk\/engineering-life\/2016\/07\/19\/the-jurassic-park-effect-the-stories-we-tell-when-deciding-how-to-govern-emerging-science\/","title":{"rendered":"The Jurassic Park Effect: the stories we tell when deciding how to govern emerging science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Deborah Scott<\/p>\n<p><em>I recently took part in the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shufflefestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Shuffle Festival<\/em><\/a><em>, a 24 hour festival in London\u2019s Mile End with the theme of \u201cGods + Idols + Lights.\u201d In a glade nestled among tall trees and Victorian tombstones,<\/em><em> the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shufflefestival.com\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Shuffle science team<\/em><\/a><em> programmed science storytelling and participatory art<\/em><em>. Biological artists <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.symbiotica.uwa.edu.au\/residents\/catts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Oron Catts<\/em><\/a><em> and <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.symbiotica.uwa.edu.au\/residents\/zurr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Ionat Zurr<\/em><\/a><em> led the building of a Golem incorporating mud, horse manure, compost, and flasks of cells from hamster ovaries and mouse muscles. Alongside, people sat on picnic blankets and folding chairs while <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/interactive\/cv\/6810-8976-6837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>actress Rayyah McCaul<\/em><\/a><em> read from Julian Huxley\u2019s 1927 short story \u201c<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/fiction\/tissue\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Tissue Culture King<\/em><\/a><em>\u201d and I talked about Jurassic Park and synthetic biology. This is the first of two posts based on that talk. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>I love <em>Jurassic Park<\/em>. In the mid-1990s, my father came home with ungainly fake-wood-paneled speakers that he set up in different parts of our living room, we popped in the VHS tape, and\u2026That first herd of CGI dinosaurs! The soaring score! The glass of water! The ominous footsteps! T-REX! Cutting edge sight and sound technologies heightened storytelling to a mind-blowing intensity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_167\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167\" class=\"wp-image-167 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sps.ed.ac.uk\/engineering-life\/files\/2016\/07\/1.jpg\" alt=\"T-Rex at the London Museum of Natural History. Yet.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Today the original <em>Jurassic Park <\/em>is still invoked, no longer as the cutting edge of movie technology but because of its science. When asked whether he had visited genetic engineering firms in preparation for the book, <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/283\/5407\/1461.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Crichton replied<\/a> \u201cWhy would I? They don\u2019t know how to make a dinosaur.\u201d But the basic idea of the science of Jurassic Park \u2013 that the ability to sequence DNA seamlessly led to the ability to construct an organism \u2013 mirrored expectations of genetics at the time. Through DNA sequencing, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/12011238\/an-overview-of-the-human-genome-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Genome Project<\/a> was going to make possible new levels of control over and intervention in our own genetic material. This promise of control, however, did not pan out; one of its legacies was instead greater appreciation for the roles of complexity and contingency in genetics.<\/p>\n<p>But the promise of simplicity and control didn\u2019t die. Synthetic biology\u2019s engineering approach to life can be seen as a way of designing in the desired simplicity, so that biology can be rebuilt rationally. An international network of labs are currently collaborating to construct a <a href=\"http:\/\/syntheticyeast.org\/sc2-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">synthetic yeast genome<\/a>; the project aims not just to re-construct the sequenced genome, but to re-design it to be more amenable to control. The majority of uses of synthetic biology that are at or near commercialization involve engineering industrial microorganisms to produce high-value compounds, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evolva.com\/vanillin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vanillin<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/synthetic-biology-s-first-malaria-drug-meets-market-resistance-1.19426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anti-malarial compound<\/a> found in the shrub <em>Artemisia<\/em>. Looking beyond the immediate horizon, there are countless promises of what synthetic biology will deliver. Directly reminiscent of <em>Jurassic Park, <\/em>some \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/deextinction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">de-extinction<\/a>\u201d projects make use of synthetic biology tools to work towards creating organisms physically and\/or functionally similar to extinct species. For example, the US-based foundation Revive and Restore is supporting research to adapt elephant DNA to include <a href=\"http:\/\/reviverestore.org\/projects\/woolly-mammoth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">woolly mammoth traits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jurassic Park <\/em>is regularly invoked in relation to cutting edge biological research. In fact, scientists themselves often bring it up. Feng Zhang, one of the developers of CRISPR-Cas9 as a gene-editing tool, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2015\/11\/06\/hollywood-inspired-scientist-rewrite-code-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">points to watching <em>Jurassic Park<\/em><\/a> as a young teenager as helping him realize \u201cbiology might also be a programmable system.\u201d Tom Ellis raised a laugh at the synthetic yeast conference by showing <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/caiyizhi\/status\/751402393733042176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this image<\/a> of the charismatic scientist leading their project. <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1503.05043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard V. Sol\u00e9 et al.<\/a> consider how their proposal to use synthetic organisms to \u201cterraform the Earth\u201d might be challenged by the \u201cJurassic Park Effect: even designed systems aimed to population control can eventually escape from genetic firewalls\u201d (i.e., \u201cLife finds a way.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to use a different set of \u201cJurassic Park Effects\u201d to describe how I\u2019ve seen <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> used in conversations around synthetic biology.<\/p>\n<p><em>1) Jurassic Park <\/em>serves as an assurance that <strong>we\u2019re not there yet<\/strong>, that science has not yet progressed to the point that it needs to be governed differently. Negotiators for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety rejected including nucleic acids from fossil or resuscitated organisms because Jurassic Park was \u201cgood fiction\u201d but not reality. Today, reporters <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/business\/article\/How-biotech-has-us-closer-to-living-dinosaurs-of-6336369.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keep asking<\/a>, how close are these de-extinction projects to <em>Jurassic Park, <\/em>really? This leads to a focus on the novelty of scientific practices, such that they are not open to contestation, critique, or question unless they meet the test of being <em>really<\/em> new. Scientists alone, so it goes, are best qualified to judge this novelty.<\/p>\n<p>2)<strong> Dinosaurs are obviously terrifying<\/strong>. A main lesson of <em>Jurassic Park<\/em>: bring back a velociraptor, and you <em>will<\/em> end up huddled in the kitchen, one yellow eye peering at you through the window, while the doorknob slowly starts to turn\u2026. The disaster spectacle of <em>Jurassic Park <\/em>is obviously part of its invocation, but not necessarily as a warning. In this <a href=\"http:\/\/tedxdeextinction.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TedX webcast<\/a>, Carl Zimmer a) invokes Jurassic Park; b) explains that dinosaurs aren\u2019t possible; and c) offers instead the Stellar sea cow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/animal-magic\/2016\/mar\/25\/stellers-sea-cow-specimen-helsinki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a giant extinct manatee<\/a>. Not only is this reassuring that scientists are choosing safer research subjects, dinosaurs are also a threat whose dangers are obvious. In <em>Jurassic Park, <\/em>control mechanisms fail in unexpected ways, but the results are exactly as foreseen: humans are ripped apart.<\/p>\n<p>3) <em>Jurassic Park <\/em>is invoked as a way to <strong>signal distrust<\/strong>. This goes two ways: that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truth-out.org\/opinion\/item\/31501-jurassic-world-and-the-dinosaurs-at-the-usda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we can\u2019t trust <em>arrogant scientists<\/em><\/a> who believe their own promises of control; and that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geneticliteracyproject.org\/2015\/06\/24\/headlines-tout-jurassic-world-in-offing-but-scientists-journalists-separate-fact-from-fiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we can\u2019t trust the <em>uneducated public<\/em><\/a> (or journalists, or decision-makers) who are gullible enough to be influenced by a scary story of impossible dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p>In these ways, <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> has come to operate as a shortcut, shutting down discussion of important points. In what forums can we explore the kinds of societal relationships that particular scientific projects enable? Can we examine the overall trajectory of particular scientific developments, rather than the novelty of the latest headline-grabbers? How best can different kinds of expertise and perspectives be brought into a project so that the less-obvious, unintended impacts are noticed? What kinds of accountability mechanisms need to be in place for actors to begin to move towards trust?<\/p>\n<p>So, as much as I love <em>Jurassic Park<\/em>, I think it\u2019s time we move on to other stories.
