It’s a nation itself. It’s like the conflict between Catalonia and Spain. Spain it’s not a nation-state, but it’s a state with few nations inside. And in few months time, when Catalonia becomes independent will create a new nation-state of its own.

Territorial subsidiarity and democratic accountability are indeed two key principles of European integration. Yet they are to be understood and contrasted against a background of (1) territorial fragmentation and transnational decision-making by actors that are resilient to territorial jurisdiction and (2) decisions adopted by technocrats and financial elites escaping democratic debate and control and jeopardising the European social welfare models. Democratic participation and citizen involvement are crucial to reinstate the welfare model but markets, especially financial markets are pulling in different directions
